Clearing Temporary Internet Files
- From the Start menu, click Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type: cleanmgr.
Click OK.
- In the Select Drive dialog box, select
the (C:) drive, and then click OK.
- In the Disk Cleanup for (C:) dialog
box, select the Temporary Internet Files
check box only, and then click OK.
- In the Disk Cleanup dialog box, click
Yes.
- Verify these steps finished.
Creating a Restore Point in System Restore
- From the Start menu, point to All
Programs, Accessories, System
Tools, and then click System Restore.
- In the System Restore dialog box, click
Create a restore point, and then click
Next.
- In the System Restore dialog box, in
the Restore point description text box,
type a name for the restore point, and then
click Create.
- In the System Restore dialog box, click
Close.
Unregistering the wuv3is.dll File
- Close Internet Explorer so site controls are
no longer in use.
- From the Start menu, click Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type: regsvr32
/u wuv3is.dll. Click OK.
- In the RegSvr32 dialog box, click OK.
- Restart the computer.
Deleting the wuv3is.dll File
- From the Start menu, point to Search,
and then click All Files and Folders.
- In the Search Results window, in the
All or part of the file name text box,
type: wuv3is.dll. Click Search.
- After finding the file, select it, and then
from the File menu, click Delete.
- In the Confirm File Delete dialog box,
click Yes.
- Close all open programs and windows.
Configuring the Computer to Show Hidden Files
and Folders
- Double-click My Computer.
- In the My Computer window, from the
Tools menu, click Folder Options.
- In the Folder Options dialog box, click
View, and then in Advanced Settings,
select Show hidden files and folders.
- In the Folder Options dialog box, click
OK.
- Close all open programs and windows.
Deleting the Contents of the Windows Update
Folder
- From the Start menu, point to All
Programs, Accessories, and then click
Windows Explorer.
- In the My Documents window, double-click
My Computer, double-click Local Disk
(C:), double-click Program Files,
and then double-click the WindowsUpdate
folder.
- In the right pane, click Wuhistv3.log,
and then from the Edit menu, click Invert
Selection. If the Wuhistv3.log file is not
listed, from the Edit menu, click Select
All.
Note: Deleting the Wuhistv3.log file is not recommended,
because it clears the Windows Update download
history and the records of any previous downloads.
Using the Invert Selection option assures
all files, except wuhistv3.log, are deleted.
- From the File menu, click Delete.
- In the Confirm File Delete dialog box,
click Yes. Close all open programs and
windows.
Deleting the Msdwnld.tmp Folder and Downloaded
Program Files
- From the Start menu, point to All
Programs, Accessories, and then click
Windows Explorer.
- In the My Documents window, double-click
My Computer, double-click Local Disk
(C:), and then double-click the WINNT
folder.
Note: If
Windows XP was reinstalled, there will not
be a WINNT folder. Double-click the Windows
folder instead.
- In the left pane of the Windows or
WINNT window, select the Msdownld.tmp
folder.
Note: If
the Msdownld.tmp folder does not appear, continue
with step 6.
- From the File menu, click Delete.
- In the Confirm Folder Delete dialog
box, click Yes.
- In the left pane of the Windows or
WINNT window, select the Downloaded
Program Files folder.
- From the Edit menu, click Select
All.
- From the File menu, click Delete.
- In the Remove Program File dialog box,
click Yes.
- Close all open programs and windows.
Unregistering the iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll
Files
- Close Internet Explorer so that the site controls
are no longer in use.
- From the Start menu, click Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type: regsvr32
/u iuctl.dll. Click OK.
- In the RegSvr32 dialog box, click OK.
- From the Start menu, click Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type: regsvr32
/u iuengine.dll. Click OK.
- In the RegSvr32 dialog box, click OK.
Deleting the iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll Files
- From the Start menu, point to Search,
and then click All Files and Folders.
- In the Search Results window, in the
All or part of the file name text box,
type: iuctl.dll.
- In the Search Results window, click
More advanced options, select Search
hidden files and folders, and then click
Search.
- In the Search Results window, first
delete the iuctl.dll file located in
the C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder,
and then delete the iuctl.dll file in
the C:\Windows\System32 folder. To delete
the files, click File, and then click
Delete.
- In the Confirm File Delete dialog box,
click Yes for each file.
- In the Windows File Protection dialog
box, click Cancel.
- In the Windows File Protection dialog
box, click Yes to keep these unrecognized
file versions.
- In the Search Results window, click
Start a new search.
- In the Search Results window, click
All Files and Folders. In the All
or part of the file name text box, type:
iuengine.dll. Click Search.
- In the Search Results window, first
delete the iuengine.dll file located
in the C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder,
and then delete the iuengine.dll file
in the C:\Windows\System32 folder. To
delete the files, click File and then
click Delete.
- In the Confirm File Delete dialog box,
click Yes for each file.
- In the Windows File Protection dialog
box, click Cancel.
- In the Windows File Protection dialog
box, click Yes to keep these unrecognized
file versions.
- Close all Open Programs and Windows.
